686 Ultralight: Featherweight 12-Gauge Shotgun for Serious Upland Hunters
The 686 Ultralight offers full-featured 12-gauge over-under performance in an extremely lightweight package, making it perfect for the most demanding upland hunts. At 5.95 lbs, it weighs less than a typical 20-gauge, which means that hunters on the move who have to wade through knee-deep marshy grounds or thigh-deep long grass won’t have to worry about the extra fatigue.
ULTRALIGHT CLASSIC
ULTRALIGHT GOLD
But while light, this shotgun does not compromise in balance, strength and durablity; this is made possible by Beretta’s half-millennium of experience selecting and working with the best metals for the intended purpose. Available with a 2 ¾" chamber and with either 26” or 28” barrels, the 686 Ultralight is a shotgun for serious hunters who demand perfect balance while wanting to shave off weight.
Best Balance, Handling
The Ultralight’s receiver is machined from a single block of light, yet remarkably strong aircraft-quality aluminium alloy, specially heat-treated to deliver the strength and durability of steel – but with 65% less weight. This is the heart of the shotgun. The rest was built around it to maximize handling and pointing capability as well as (of course) that unmistakable Beretta balance. If you place your finger under the action’s hinge-pin, this is where the 686 Ultralight will balance: it comes up to the shoulder like a dream, while your supporting hand will still feel a certain “liveliness” from the forward portion of the fore-end and barrels. As with any 680-family Beretta shotgun, the whole is designed to let your eye and supporting hand act in perfect concert as they lead you to the target.
Vault-Strong Action, Durable Barrels
Besides the space-age alloys of which it is constructed, the 686 Ultralight’s action is engineered to be mechanically strong. It features dual conical locking lugs engaging the barrel unit right between the barrels--that is, halfway up the action. The main advantages of this design are two. Firstly, the mid-way location of the lugs dispenses with the need of having extra metal on top of the action for a cross-bolt, making the receiver trim and low-profile.Secondly, the conical shape of the locking lugs makes them self-adjusting, meaning that as the number of shots fired gets into the four digits, the lugs will merely sit deeper (and keep their positive engagement with the barrels) rather than cause the action to weaken. A titanium insert is also there to protect the breech face against year of serious hunting. As to the Mobilchoke-system barrels, they are internally chromed, smoothed and polished to resist corrosion and residual wear and tear from the use of steel shot.
Classic Looks
At Beretta, we know that bragging rights don’t stop at the edge of the field or the clay range: opening the gun-case in frond of your friends and hunting companions is (or should be!) as much of a rewarding experience as taking that elusive partridge or grouse. This is why we take extra care in making sure that our guns are as attractive as they are functional, and the 686 Ultralight is no exception. Besides the proportions of the action and their harmony with the overall lines of the shotgun (a work of art in itself), we have embellished the receiver with a game-scene engraving enhanced with motifs that suggest the lightness of the gun. Furthermore, the gold-plated trigger and other attractive accents are present to yield some extra beauty to the ensemble.
